How Rob Emmerling is Being Promoted, or Promoting Himself, on the Internet

2011 Note - This page was creaed in 2005. I updated it a bit in 2011. It seems Rob is still promoting himself in the same way he did back then.

---

Here is something I found on the net

"Dr. Robert Emmerling is a leading expert in the assessment and development of emotional intelligence in the workplace, and has spent his career as a consultant, researcher and lecturer specializing in this area."

Then I did some searches to see what else was being said about Rob and I found quite a lot to read. But as I read through these little advertisements for Rob, I kept thinking that Rob probably wrote most of this stuff himself and then sent it to these websites when they asked him for some biographical information. This is what used to happen to me when I was going public speaking. Nearly always, someone would ask me to send them a description of myself.

In other words, I suspect Rob is promoting himself as "a leading expert..." and that it is Rob who says he is the webmaster of "the world's most visited website related to emotional intelligence".

Well, as most of you know who use google, my site has been number one for most, if not all, of the past year. Before that it was often number two, second to one made at Cornell which has now seemed to have disappeared. Rob's site -- the EI Consortium. has almost never been ranked ahead of mine in google.

So judge for yourselves when you read these promotional backgrounds of Rob.

2011 Note as of today, the EI consortium site is ranked number 10 in google for searches on emotional intelligence as compared to wikipedia, number 1 and eqi.org number 2.

April 19, 2005 Update.

As I suspected, Rob is writing his own advertisements. I wrote to some of the websites where Rob is being called a "leading expert" and I asked who wrote the promotional descriptions of Emmerling. So far I have already received one reply saying that Rob wrote his own description. I will later provide you with the name of the person who wrote me with that person's permission if I can get it. But if you doubt me, write to Rob and ask him directly who is saying that he is a "leading expert in the assessment and development of emotional intelligence in the workplace" and who is saying that he has "spent his career as a consultant, researcher and lecturer specializing in this area." Oh, and ask him just how long his "career" has been as a consultant. And how much actual work experience he has outside of academia and the EI Consortium job.
