EQI home | Words Lazy Once I met a guy in his twenties in a hostel in Florida. He called himself lazy. It was a long time ago but it seems I have never written it up here. Yet I have told many pepole this story, so I will tell it here now because I believe it is important. I asked him what he meant when he said he was lazy. He said the usual things like he didn't like to study or go to school or work. Then I asked him if there was anything he liked to do. He said yes. He liked to go fishing. I asked him to tell me about going fishing and getting prepared to go. He said he started getting prepared the day before and then he got up early in the morning when he went out fishing. So this helped me see that lazy is a relative thing. If we are not motivated to do something, someone else might call us "lazy." But often, when they do, they are just trying to make us feel guilty so we will do things they want us to do. I believe we basically have all lived in a society where few of us have done things because we were really intrinsically motivated to do them. In other words, because *we* really wanted to do them. Instead, our motivation has come from outside. Either to get a reward or a grade or money or to avoid some punishment or something painful. I remember Dennis Waitely saying there are two basic motivations, fear and desire. He said desire is much better. And I agree. S. Hein |
