Emotional literacy not part of the Goleman corporate definition of emotional intelligence

April 17, 2005

I just did a site search of the EI Consortium site. I searched for the term "emotional literacy". I found these two results:

Albert Liau

... The case for emotional Literacy: The influence of emotional intelligence on problem ... Emotional literacy: A conceptualization based on the pedagogy of ...

Here is the complete reference

Daniel Goleman

...University Child Studies Center (now at the University of Illinois at Chicago), with the mission to help schools introduce emotional literacy courses.

----

The first one is just part of the title of an article Albert Liau wrote. It is one of many on his individual membership credentials/marketing page. It seems there is not even a copy of the article on the EI Consortium site.

As for the second one, here is a more complete quotation from the search result. It is just part of Goleman's self-promotion on his membership page. And, interestlying, he now has his email right on the top. This indicates to me he is running low on consulting work. As I recall, he never used to have his email address on there.

Dr. Goleman was a co-founder of the Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning at the Yale University Child Studies Center (now at the University of Illinois at Chicago), with the mission to help schools introduce emotional literacy courses. One mark of the Collaborative—and book’s—impact is that thousands of schools around the world have begun to implement such programs.

This is a bit confusing to me. He evidently wanted to raise emotional literacy back then, but now he never mentions it again on his entire site. This gives me more reason to believe he doesn't really place a high value either on feelings or talking about them directly.

Obviously, emotional literacy is not an important part, or even any part, of the Goleman's corporate definition of emotional intelligence.
